Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 Leaks in Hands on Pictures, Seems to Feature Metal and Glass Case

The Xiaomi Mi Pad was a pretty good tablet to purchase last year and we’ve been waiting for a follow-up for a long time now. We’ve heard various rumors about the Mi Pad 2 and today we get to see this device, via a couple of hands on shots.

They were posted on Weibo and the slate clearly borrows design traits from the Mi Note and Mi Note Pro. It actually feels like a bigger phablet, more than a 7 inch or 7.9 inch tablet, to be honest. Rumors say we should expect a glass back and a curved front panel, like on the Mi Note, although these images make the device look like it’s made of metal.

We also noticed an earpiece and a series of sensors at the top front, which means the slate may also be used as a phone. The Xiaomi Mi Pad was a WiFi only unit, so the newcomer may bring LTE and 3G as extra, as well as phone calling. I can’t quite understand why there are capacitive buttons on board, a feature not present on tablets usually.

Anyway, the leak claims we’ll get Android 5.0 here with MIUI 6 on top, but sadly we don’t have any hardware specs just yet.

Dell Venue 8 7000 Will Be Launched in India Next Month

At Mobile World Congress 2015 we had the chance to see in live the slimmest tablet on the market, more precisely the Dell Venue 8 7000, device that also offers some pretty slim bezels around the screen too. After Dell started to sell this device in US, now we get to know that soon Indian customers will be able to buy this piece of technology too.

In terms of specs we’re looking at a tablet that packs a 8.4 inch display (2560 x 1600 pixels), an Intel Atom Z3580 processor clocked at 2.3 GHz, an Intel HD Graphics GPU, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB space of internal storage and a microSD card slot. There’s WiFi, Bluetooth, microUSB v2.0 and a 2-megapixel front-facing sensor.

Beside these specs, Dell Venue 8 7000 brings something impressive. We’re talking about the Intel RealSense technology that works with the two 720p cameras on the back (depth-sensing) plus the 8-megapixel rear sensor. By using such a technology, we’re able to re-focus the pictures made, something similar to the HTC One M8 duo sensor.

Xiaomi To Add USB-C In New Products

My interest in this phone continues. What’s not like with it still being US$99 at MetroPCS?

What hasn’t been to like are the attitudes of ZTE and T-Mobile/MetroPCS. The bootloader is locked. ZTE/T-Mobile won’t allow people to unlock it.

There’s been no root (one developer was working on it, succeeded, then met with a series of personal crises — along with harassment from impatient children at XDA — that prevented further work).

While an unlocked bootloader is probably out of the question (until ZTE and T-Mobile regain their sanity), it seems that achieving root is getting closer.

Those with Linux/coding experience can witness the work in progress at XDA Developers starting here.

If this gets made into an APK that allows easy root, it’d be fantastic. Without an unlocked bootloader, I’m not sure that any custom ROMs would be possible. But still, apps that require root to perform magic would be possible and that would greatly increase the value and usefulness of the phone.

Alaska Airlines Gets Inflight System Based on Microsoft Solutions, Windows Tablets

Microsoft announced on the official Windows blog that Alaska Airlines was upgrading its flight experience with new technology, based on Microsoft’s solutions. The fleet of airplanes will feature Windows inflight entertainment solutions and tablets.

7,000 Windows Toshiba Encore 2 tablets have been included on aircrafts. The inflight tablets are running Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 is also promised to come to these devices. The devices deployed across the Alaska Airlines fleet are operated by Skycast Solutions, Microsoft’s partner in this initiative. Security is enhanced here and the slates come bundled with movies that are still in theaters.

The tablets include a variety of services and content, including movies, TV shows, e-publications and games. The Windows models will work during the flight, with the devices recharger for the next departure. Alaska Airlines also teamed up with the digital engineering firm Ratio to integrate technologies, developer entertainment apps and embedded experience.

HTC Nexus 9 Tablet May Get HTC Sense Version

We previously learned a few rumors about a fresh 8.9 inch HTC tablet, only to find out we could also get to see a HTC Sense version of the Nexus 9. Last year, this Google slate didn’t receive a lot of love, for various reasons, like the screen, design or battery life.

If we analyze the rumors closely, we may find that the rumored new tablet from HTC, the T1H has a lot of the specs of the Nexus 9. This may mean that the new model is in fact a non stock Android device, with HTC Sense on top and the rest is the same hardware of the Nexus 9. Obviously we’ll get the BoomSound speakers, same physical size, display, battery capacity and RAM.

Of course, if you really want to get technical, the Nexus 9 is 7.95 mm thick, while the T1H is 7.88 mm thick, but that’s not a big difference. The most odd thing here is the CPU choice, an Allwinner instead of the Nexus 9’s Tegra chipset. A low cost CPU means a low cost tablet and not a lot of performance obviously. Would such a product be received better than the Nexus version?

BlackBerry turns a profit!

BlackBerry has been trying to dig itself out of its hole for quite some time now. No matter how many different approaches they take, they just can’t seem to get a hold of the market again. This is why today’s news probably comes as a ray of light from the heavens above… at least to BlackBerry and its followers. The company has turned a profit last quarter!

To be exact, BlackBerry reported a profit of $28 million (an extra $0.05 per share). This raises its shares by 3%, which is not huge, but a significant victory considering they have been doing nothing but spiral down the past years. Now, this doesn’t mean BlackBerry is selling more phones. In fact, revenue lowered to $660 million over the same quarter, last year, which accounted to $976 million.

Opinion: In short, this pretty much means BlackBerry did well reducing costs. It’s still a victory, but not a full one. Now I have to wonder if they can convince people to buy theBlackBerry Classic and Passport this year. I actually just got the Classic for review; soon I will tell you if it’s worth your cash.

HTC loses yet another chief of design

It hasn’t even been a year since Scott Croyle, former chief of design, left HTC for good. Now we are learning his replacement, Jonah Becker is also ready to leave the company. Not much is being revealed, but HTC has already replaced Jonah with Daniel Hundt, who is based in the Taiwanese manufacturer’s San Francisco design office.

“We can confirm that Jonah Becker has left HTC; he had been with the Company since HTC acquired One & Co over six years ago. We would like to thank Jonah for his work with HTC, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. He has been succeeded by Daniel Hundt, based in our San Francisco design office.”

Opinion: So… new CEO and new chief of design. I wonder what the future of HTC will be like.

Apple CEO plans to give away most of his wealth before dying

It would seem hard to believe that millionaires would give away all their money before passing away, but it’s a habit famous wealthy personalities are starting to adopt. The idea is that it’s not good to spoil your offspring with fortunes that will make them take life for granted. These people want their kids and family to work and earn their own money.

People like Sting and Bill Gates follow this philosophy, and now we know Tim Cook is adding himself to this list. He says he will be donating most of his before passing. This says a lot about a man who is worth well over $700 million dollars. He would only leave his family enough cash for his nephew to afford college comfortably.

Opinion: I believe this makes total sense. These are guys who worked their way up the ladder with a lot of effort, and that is likely why they were able to accomplish so much. To be honest, I will probably do the same if I ever become rich (which is pretty unlikely – lol).
